Acclaimed essayist Edward Short writes with his usual insight and brio on a range of subjects – poets, historians, novelists and moralists – touching on subjects as diverse as the prophetical vision of Anthony Trollope, the history of the American hotel, the poetry of Thomas Hardy and the prose of WH Auden and TS Eliot, the Easter Rebellion, and Abraham Lincoln and slavery. A number of pieces on Saint John Henry Cardinal Newman round out this rich, elegant miscellany.
